The benefits of electric vehicles to business and employees

Running costs

The British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association has calculated that depending on when and how an electric vehicle is charged it will cost 2-4p per mile to run. This compares to 10-14p per mile for an equivalent petrol or diesel vehicle. Therefore on average the fuel costs based on an annual mileage of 10,000 would be:

  • petrol/diesel – £1,200 (based on 12p per mile)
  • electric vehicle – £300 (based on 3p per mile)

Maintenance costs

Electric vehicles require very little maintenance meaning a considerable cost saving, especially as cars get older. New research suggests that electric vehicles can cost 35% less than equivalent internal combustion-engined vehicles:

  • electric motors are incredibly simple, with few moving parts; internal combustion vehicles, however, have hundreds of parts
  • no need for changes to oil, filters or spark plugs
  • electric cars are far less aggressive on their brakes, lasting up to 3 times longer than conventional cars

Tax advantages

  • fuel duty exempt
  • vehicle excise duty exempt
  • company car tax exempt
  • enhanced capital allowance – full cost of an electric car or van relief against taxable profits in the year of acquisition
  • VAT – electricity used to recharge a plug-in vehicle at home attracts only a 5% level of VAT, much lower than road fuels (20% level of VAT)
